In and around Stalis

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, and is the fifth largest of all the Mediterranean islands. It was the centre of the oldest Greek civilisation, the Minoan culture. It has a significant historical place in Greek mythology. Today Crete has become a magnet for tourist due to its excellent weather and its historic sites.

Lying on the North East coast of Crete is Malia, and a section of this area is known as Stalis. Stalis is a very popular destination for European visitors, including Dutch, German, Irish and British holidaymakers. The town occupies a fairly relaxed part of Crete, which means that you can find peace and quiet. The town of Stalis is situated alongside the main beach, and you will find bars and restaurants running parallel to it. There are traditional restaurants as well as several small friendly bars. There are several small dancing clubs, which offer some entertainment into the early hours. Stalis can be used as a base if you wish to tour the island of Crete. In addition to being close to the beach, it is within easy reach of the mountains, and is also just an hour away from the capital of Crete, Heraklion. Once a small fishing village, Stalis was seen as a place to develop when tourists stared to visit the area in the mid 1970s. Drawn by the clear blue seas and sandy beaches, Stalis soon became popular with families. There are several four and five star hotels overlooking the sea, and many of them have private beach areas. There are usually beach facilities available where you can buy drinks and food. Stalis itself has a range of shops, which include leather, jewellery and fashion shops. Alternatively, if you like to explore, then the towns of Mohos and Krassi are worth a visit in the mountains behind Stalis. Humans inhabited the island as long as six thousand years ago. Evidence of settlements can be found dating back over three thousand years ago, and graves have been excavated from this period. Evidence of Roman settlement in the area has also been found. Many of the artefacts found in the area are to be found at the Museum of Heraklion.

Heraklion airport is the main airport on the island, although there is also another international airport at Chania. The island can also be accessed by boat through the ports of Heraklion, Chania, Agios Nikolaos and Rethimno. There are a wide range of accommodation options in Stalis, from luxury hotels to smaller family orientated accommodation. It is advisable to book your holiday once you have carried out a degree of research. There is very little for children to do in Stalis itself, therefore it is advisable to make sure that there is sufficient entertainment available at the hotel in order for your children to enjoy their holiday. There are quizzes and entertainment in some of the English style bars. However, there are activities in some of the resorts which are not too far away. This includes paintballing, horse riding, and football, and being a port, there are plenty of opportunities to go fishing around Stalis. For further information about accommodation in Stalis, go to Stalis hotels.
